JAMES (JIM) E STANGROOM  PhD

Dr. Stangroom, based in Sheffield UK, joins ISMC in the capacity of Scientific Advisor. Jim is a senior chemist, fluid dynamicist, inventor and global expert in the field of Oceanic Controlled Buoyancy Lifting and Emplacement. He is co-inventor, together with ISMC Chairman Barry Ressler, of a high flow rate opaque fluid treatment using photoactivation processes. His contribution includes application, development and solution algorithms in the field of opaque fluid sterilization for healthcare, food, materials and battlefield medical applications.

Jim has extensive background in the development of electrorheological fluids, a field in which he is recognized as a leading expert, and has been an important asset in the fluid dynamic portion of our work. He is the principal inventor of 14 patents in the field of Electrorheological Fluids, including fluid compositions and applications for hydraulic valves, clutches, actuators and pumps. This expertise, developed to address ordnance recoil damping and applications in the commercial oceanic oil and gas industries using robotics and remotely operated vehicles, is also applicable to the fields of human spaceflight, space tourism and low Earth orbit/interplanetary colonization challenges.

Jim holds a degree from Cambridge University in Chemistry and earned his PhD at the University of Sheffield for his thesis on “The Fine Structure of Chinese Gallotannin
